These are common questions that I hear:
“Can you use wart remover on skin tags and moles?”
“Does wart remover work on skin tags and moles?”
The short answer: No and Yes, depends on which wart remover you choose.
Wart Removers That Do NOT Work on Skin Tags and Moles
If you visit stores and pharmacies like Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, Boots –
here are some common over the counter wart remover and brands that you will find:
- Compound W gel and freeze off
- Dr Scholl‘s wart remover
- Duofilm solution and gel
- Bazuka verruca gel and sub-zero freeze
- Wartner wart and verruca pen
As indicated on the respective wart remover packaging labels –
All these products are only formulated for treatment of common wart and plantar wart.
Meaning these wart removers are NOT to be used for skin tag and mole removal.
For example: Should you use Dr Scholl’s for mole removal?
The packaging label clearly indicates ‘this product is for the treatment of common warts and verrucas (plantar warts)’.
And the product instruction leaflet of Dr Scholl’s wart remover clearly states:
‘Do NOT use on.. Moles’
If I Use These Wart Removers on Skin Tags & Moles – Will They Work?
So, anyone tried off-label use of these wart removal products like Compound W wart remover and Dr Scholl’s wart remover to get rid of mole and skin tag?
We combed through the forum and actual user reviews, and did find some people who used such Compound W and Dr Scholl’s wart remover for skin tags and mole – with mixed results.
Here are some feedback with positive results:
Mehetabelle, Compound W Freeze Off user from Silicon Valley, said: ‘I froze off a few moles, skin tags and sun discolored spots. This is much less damaging than having a dermatologist or other medical professional cut it out. No scarring!”
AutumnBlonde from Midwest used Salicylic Acid based Compound W wart removal gel and commented: ‘I used it to remove a skin tag on my underarm area. It works well on skin tags. I applied it twice per day, once in the AM and once in the PM before bed. In approximately two weeks time, the skin tag decreased in size. This isn’t a quick fix.. It works, but is slow at doing so, and it burns.’
Dan Neiderhiser used Dr. Scholl’s Dual Action Freeze Away Treatment and feedback: ‘Excellent for removing surface moles too! Just remove the foam sponge to let the liquid nitrogen make contact with the skin for a few seconds. It stings a little, but it isn’t near as bad as I thought it would be.’
And below are some unpleasant personal experiences of using Compound W and Dr Scholl’s wart remover to treat skin tag and moles:
CCS said in forum: “I just bought Compound W Freeze Off from the store. Didn’t follow the direction.. I froze some of the moles twice last night, got the swelling… Morning came, the swelling is gone, but I already know it will not fall off. Even after freezing, the cells just go right back to how they were before. I need liquid nitrogen, not Compound W. Compound W is not cold enough to freeze deep enough to kill the mole.”
L. Madej from New Jersey used Salicylic Acid based Compound W wart removal gel and commented: ‘Does not work on skin tags sorry… would not recommend for skin tag definitely does not work and irritates skin.’
Victor Fontanot used Dr. Scholl’s Dual Action Freeze Away Treatment and feedback: ‘I bought this product to help me eliminate some skin tag I got, at the beggining appears to start working but, my tags start getting bigger and dark, then shrinks a little bit, after that nothing, just pain.’
Wart Removers That Work To Remove Skin Tags and Moles
As mentioned in the beginning, whether a wart remover work on skin tags and moles depends on which wart removal product you choose.
There are 2 over the counter wart removers in the market that are formulated to get rid of moles and skin tag as well:
Each Nevi Skin container holds enough topical treatment cream to remove 10-30 small skin tags / moles, in which its formulation causes destruction of the skin tags / mole directly down to root.
User reviews show Nevi Skin has been effective in removing warts, skin tags, and moles – with examples as below:
Mo Jo from Essex of England said: ‘I had a mole removed a few years ago which cost £300… I’ve removed 3 moles (all on my face) with this stuff and still have plenty left… I removed the lotion after 20 minutes as instructed using cotton wool and plenty of clean water. There was a slight tingling sensation for a while later but by the morning scabs had started to form. 2 of the treated areas stayed tender for a few days – one was quite a big mole so I’m not really surprised. I’m almost 2 weeks post treatment and 2 areas are clear, smooth and mole free. Where the large mole was there is still a tiny scab there but I can see it’s healing nicely and there won’t be any trace left soon.’
W. A. M. Zwanenberg wrote: ‘I will admit that I was a little skeptical about this product before I went ahead and ordered it.. Applying this stuff to two skins tags that I wanted removed.. After about 3 weeks of using the product by applying it as instructed, it turned a very dark blackish brown colour and within 24 hours it had dropped..’
Pamela J. Crawford feedback: ‘About 6 months ago my hands broke out in warts. I was told I could have them frozen off by the doctors but I hate it. So my friend told me about Nevi-Skin and I thought I’d give it a go. Boy am I glad I did! I put the stuff on a couple of my warts first to see how it went. It felt weird for a couple of minutes but it wasn’t painful and those warts fell right off in a couple of days. This is awesome stuff!’
Wart & Mole Vanish cream contains cashew plant, greater celandine plant, fig plant, lemon, and other natural ingredients.
Similarly, this award winning mole removal product also received positive customer reviews, with examples as follows:
Elizabeth A. Newman of Montana said: ‘I used this product to remove a large mole on my back. The mole immediately sank and for the longest time I had a large, deep scab in its place. It has now been roughly 3 years and the mole never returned and the scar is practically gone.’
T. Orcino from Grass Valley feedback: ‘This product does everthing it said it would – I removed several small moles with one application, and one very large skin tag that took several applications, mainly because I couldn’t get at the base of it like you’re supposed to. The “stinging” can be somewhat intense, but it only lasts about 10 minutes and it’s well worth the results.’
Sammy T. commented: ‘Used it to get rid of 2 warts on my fingers. First, I went to the dermatologist and pay hundreds only to have the warts come back worse. I used Mole wart and it really worked. Yes it hurts a little but will get rid of the wart! I put on duct tape for about 1 week to loosen up the skin on the wart. Then I put on mole wart and it made a black scab and after a week the wart fell off and NEVER came back! Only thing that has ever worked for me. This product works!’
